This piece is a hanging quilt done with piecing and applique work. I used my stylized work in illustration to create a dimensional piece that can be used as decor. While trying to keep it as two dimensional as possible, I also used the fabric's ability to interact with light to create a wrinkle effect in the lips and on the tongue. The quilt has black binding to finish the edges and I used a technique with stitching to create a thick dark line around the tongue so that the binding blended well with the bright colors of the piece.
Progress photos

This is the first sketch of the piece with small notes about materials and the dimensions.

This image shows the layout I started with which was originally a full rectangular shape that I was going to attempt to sew together. I decided later to take apart the green shape into small pieces in order to stop the blue from wrinkling too much. I ended up piecing together four sections of the green onto the blue piece.

This is the last progress photo where all of the applique and piecing is finished. The tongue and teeth were applique and got completely finished with an outline of thick black thread and then smaller quilting done in the middle of them. The green and blue pieces are pieced together here and were then quilted.
